RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -

The Richmond Police Department is investigating after a 5-year-old boy was shot in the Whitcomb Court public housing community on Sunday evening.

Around 6:47 p.m. on May 11, officers were called to the 2300 block of Ambrose Street, south of I-64 and west of Route 360/Mechanicsville Turnpike for a report of shots fired. Richmond Police officers, detectives and command staff arrived on scene to find the child suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to VCU Medical Center for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

According to detectives, the fired shots were the result of a dispute and struck the boy, who was playing nearby.

“This is a deplorable situation,” RPD Chief Ray J. Tarasovic said at the scene. “I call on all those in the community with any knowledge of the identity of these reprehensible suspects to come forward immediately with information. It is a disgraceful situation when a small boy suffers a grievous injury because detestable individuals use guns within our communities.”

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers by calling 804-780-1000 or texting “iTip” followed by the tip to 274637.
