RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -

For the 19th year, members of the Richmond Police Department are honoring officers who died in the line of duty by biking to Washington, D.C. as part of the Bike for the Blue memorial ride.

The annual pilgrimage began at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Roughly 60 officers representing RPD and other jurisdictions from Virginia and North Carolina, along with local and Washington ATF agents, began the 117-mile ride at the State Capitol. The group is pedaling up Route 1 to meet their colleagues from across the country in the nation’s capital, where they’ll watch the Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony.

May 11-17 is National Police Week. RPD is remembering the 29 officers who gave their lives for the City of Richmond.
