CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - The Chesterfield County Police Department is investigating a double shooting at an apartment complex that left one man dead and another man injured early Thursday morning.

Around 12:43 a.m. Thursday, officers received a report of shots fired at the Regency Lake Apartments on the 3300 block of Meadowdale Boulevard, off of South Beulah Road and south of Route 150/Chippenham Parkway. They arrived to find 23-year-old David Emmanuel-Sinclair Copeland, of the 3300 block of Meadowdale Boulevard, dead in the parking lot. Another victim was transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are searching for two suspects; detailed descriptions of the alleged shooters are unavailable at this time.

David's brother James Copeland was there and says he heard everything.

"There was a lot of running," he says. "Just ducking and running. There was rumors in the air like there is a body over here, but i didn't know it was my brother."

David was a star athlete at Chesterfield Community High School.

His coach says David holds the record for the all-time leading scorer and was the most decorated student athlete ever to play there. David also had a full scholarship to play for Grambling State University in Louisiana.

"My brother was a kind, caring, giving person," James says. "He didn't want to hurt nobody."

James Copeland says he lived here in this home with his brother David and another roommate. The other roommate was also shot but is expected to be okay.

The family says they are staying positive for David.

"Dave would just want us to be happy, that's it," James says.
