CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -

One person is in the hospital Saturday after an apartment fire in Chesterfield. The fire broke out around 8 p.m. at Riverterrace Apartments off River Road near Virginia State University.

When crews arrived, they found heavy dark smoke coming out of the two-story apartment.

Firefighters were able to get one person out of the building. That person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

About 30 firefighters responded to the call...they had to force themselves into the apartment by knocking down walls.

One of the neighbors next doors says she was asleep when the fire broke out.

"My roommate came in and he was running in my room like ' Get up, there's a fire, there's a fire.' And as soon as i got up I realized my entire room was thick with smoke. It was just like really intense and then the fire department came through, started breaking windows. it was like really crazy," said Natasha Graham.

The Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.
