PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -
Families looking for something to do this Memorial Day can soak up fun and history at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.
Folks at the park, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, take learning about the Civil War seriously, with a side of fun. This Memorial Day is no different; Pamplin offers a day jam-packed with activities for the entire family, from costumed tours to hands-on rifle demonstrations.
While there are many fun activities for families to enjoy, the importance of Memorial Day is not forgotten.
“We’re remembering those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” said Gary Helm, the supervisor of historical interpretation and visitor services. “That’s the key thing we’re trying to say.”
“When we have good lives, things are going well, sometimes we forget,” Helm said. “Forget the past and what people have done to make all that possible.”
At Pamplin, organizers hope taking a step into the past can help people better understand and appreciate those sacrifices.
Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road, Petersburg, Va. 23803. The park is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $12.50 for adults, $11.50 for seniors and military members with ID, $7.50 for children 6-12 and free for children under 6.
