RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -
Five members of Richmond City Council now say they plan on voting against the Shockoe Bottom Ballpark plan and are expected to make a decision on it at Tuesday's Council meeting.
We've heard from everyone involved from City Council to those opposed of moving it to Shockoe Bottom. But who have we not heard from? The Squirrels fans themselves.
"I kinda like where it is now," says Flying Squirrels fan Terry Kid. "If they can make renovations to the park here. It's an area that really could use some renovation."
"I personally think it should stay here," says fan Kyle Pemberton. "And just do all of the renovations here."
It seemed a lot of fans 8News spoke with say they like the Diamond where it is, but they all agree that it needs an upgrade.
On top of that, the Flying Squirrels continue to lead their division in attendance with more than 2,000 fans attending the aging stadium per game.
That's one reason team leaders have said they support a new ballpark.
"Based on the numbers, we have a very strong fan base that cares a lot," says Flying Squirrels Chief Operating Officer Todd "Parney" Parnell. "That's what I focus on."
But whether or not it's downtown or on the Boulevard, that's up to the city now and for the team and its fans to wait and see.
And after all of those months of debate, there may finally be a decision made by City Council Tuesday as they are expected to vote on the mayor's proposal.
