GLEN ALLEN, Va. (WRIC) -

A shoplifting suspect is facing charges after she allegedly stole items from a grocery store and then attempted to carjack an off-duty Henrico County Police officers’ vehicle on Memorial Day.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on May 26, Sandra Sandiford was seen stealing items from the MARTIN’s at 10250 Staples Mill Road. Store employees attempted to stop her, but Sandiford continued to walk out of the store and crossed Staples Mill Road.

The suspect then approached a pickup truck that was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Warren and Staples Mill roads. Sandiford threw the stolen items in the truck through an open window and climbed into the vehicle.

The driver of the pickup, an off-duty Henrico County Police Officer, shut off the ignition. Sandiford took his keys, started the car, attempted to put the vehicle in gear and threatened the officer.

The officer and a witness managed to gain control of the suspect and waited for police to arrive.

Sandiford has been charged with grand larceny and carjacking.
