RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Just weeks after a Gallup poll named Richmond the third most obese major community in the country, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has ranked the city 21st on its seventh annual American Fitness Index (AFI).

AFI reflects “a composite of preventative health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, and community resources and policies that support physical activity,” according to a statement from ACSM.

The report, “Health and Community Fitness Status of the 50 Largest Metropolitan Areas,” gives Richmond a score of 52.3 out of 100 possible points. Virginia Beach, the only other city in the Commonwealth to make the list, came in just behind Richmond in 22nd place, with a rank of 52.

“Health advocates and community leaders have come to expect the arrival of the American Fitness Index as an annual check-up regarding their community’s health and fitness levels,” said Walter Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, chair of the AFI Advisory Board. “The AFI data report is a snapshot of the state of health in the community and an evaluation of the infrastructure, community assets and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles. These measures directly affect quality of life in our country’s urban areas.”

The top three fittest cities are Washington, D.C., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. and Portland, Ore. with scores of 77.3, 73.5 and 72.1, respectively. Memphis, Tenn. came in 50th with a score of 24.8. Below is the full list of rankings.
