RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Nearly 17,000 people go to free clinics in Richmond for their primary care, but what happens when they need to see a specialist? The Richmond Academy of Medicine has a program called Access Now to help meet the needs of patients.

Gray Garrett is an actor who was diagnosed with skin cancer. At the time, she had no health insurance and looked to Access Now to remove the Squamous cell carcinoma and for facial reconstructive surgery.

"To have given me the life I'm living and also to let me preserve and keep my life, I'll never be able to repay them," Garrett said just hours after she finished a performance of Beyond the Rainbow at the Swift Creek Mill Theatre.

Access Now is a network of 900 specialists in the Richmond area, representing oncology, cardiology, dermatology and more.

"Anything that the specialist provides in their office is free, uncompensated. If they have to go to a hospital for any sort of procedure or testing or diagnostic, that's also provided," said Program Manager Marilyn Nicol.

Since Access Now started, it's served 9,000 people over 25,000 appointments.

"We're just happy to be able to provide this service to the Richmond community. It's a much, much needed service to the patients," Nicol said.

Garrett agrees. The care she received helped to save her face, which is part of her livelihood working in theater.

"It's a wonderful organization," she said.
