Lightning May Have Sparked Blaze at Richmond Apartment Complex

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -

Wednesday night's severe weather is likely to blame for a fire at a Southside Richmond Apartment Complex.

Fire crews were called to St. John's Wood Apartments shortly after 8pm for a report of a fire. Crews believe lightning may have sparked the blaze.

Two apartments units were affected and fire crews say five people have been displaced because of the fire.

People living at the complex say the ground shook when the lightning struck and they knew something wasn't right.

"We was taking out the trash," said resident Victoria Boatwright. "We had like three bags and I actually dropped the trash right here because it scared the crap out of me."

Fire crews say that flames shot through the roof of both units and the second floor of both of the apartments will likely be considered a complete loss.

The occupant of the apartment said he had just recently got home," said Richmond Fire Department spokesman Shawn Jones.

Fire investigators were on the scene for hours Wednesday night and the Red Cross is assisting those impacted by the fire.
