A fifth-grade student at Rivers Edge Elementary School in Glen Allen has advanced to the National Spelling Bee finals in National Harbor, Md.
Tejas Muthusamy survived the sixth round of the bee by correctly spelling “exsiccosis” (insufficient intake of fluids).
Thursday’s semifinals started with 46 spellers; the 12 finalists, of which Tejas is a member, were picked from among the 31 sixth-round survivors based on the results of a computer exam administered earlier in the competition.
Samuel Pereles of Waynesboro will join Tejas in Thursday night’s final, which airs at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
Tejas, the son of Muthusamy Jeevanantham and Sri Santhanagopalan, won the Richmond Times-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee in March.
