A Washington Redskins mega-fan and Centreville High School student who has cerebral palsy got the surprise of his life on Thursday, when quarterback Robert Griffin III helped invite him to the prom.
Even though Juwaan Espinal, 17, is nonverbal due to cerebral palsy, he has no shortage of good friends. One of his classmates, Morgan Assel, wanted to find a creative way to ask her special friend to the prom.
At a lacrosse game at Centreville High on May 29, several students helped Morgan hold up a sign that reads: “I know I’m not as cool as RGIII, but will you go to the prom with me?”
When the NFL star popped out from behind the banner, Juwaan became visibly ecstatic. He agreed to be Morgan’s date to the prom and took the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take multiple selfies with his favorite football player.
“I’m just really excited and really grateful that RGIII came to help Juwaan,” Morgan told WJLA, our ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C. “It just really means a lot that people are willing to do this for him, because he is such a special person and he really deserves it.”
Juwaan’s mother, Ibis Espinal, told WJLA, “In a time that you see a lot of kids and negative stories about children and then you turn around see something like this, it makes you feel good.”
RGIII was happy to help make one of Juwaan’s dreams come true.
“You can tell he’s filled with life,” Griffin said. “We make time in our schedules for stuff like this ‘cause it’s so worth it.”
