RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A one-year-old girl is in serious but stable condition after a Sunday night shooting in Richmond’s Hillside Court. Richmond Police are searching for answers in this troubling incident.
Richmond Police responded to the 1400 block of Hardwood Street just after 10 p.m. Sunday.
The one-year-old girl was taken to VCU Medical Center, where she was in critical, but stable condition. The infant was with her mother on a home’s front porch when she was shot, according to Richmond Police.
Lisa Hubbard lives directly across street from where the shooting happened.
"It's a tragedy," she says. "It's sad… it's sickening… it's just heartbreaking to see something like that happen. It's every parents and grandparents worst nightmare for something like that to happen."
She says she worries about the safety of her own 8-month-old granddaughter.
"it's very frightening," she says. "I wouldn't know what to do with myself."
Neighbors say unfortunately the sound of gunfire is heard often in this neighborhood.
"Children want to come outside and play, but you got to run in the house because you hear gunshots here, gunshots there," says Sabrina McLaurin. "I mean it's a good environment but it's just too dangerous for the kids out here."
Many neighbors we spoke with echoed the same sentiment, saying something needs to be done.
"Something needs to be done as far as this crime we need more police people to come out," Hubbard says.
An investigation into the shooting remains in its early stage; police are seeking answers to many unanswered questions, including who pulled the trigger and circumstances surrounding the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made and no suspect description has been released.
