After House Fire, Family Worries About Unauthorized Online Donations

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Va. (WRIC) - As a Chester family recovers from a deadly house fire, they are worried about unauthorized accounts that are accepting donations.

The family noticed more than one donation account set up and they want to make sure that people are able to give to the right one.

When David Vance Senior knew his son's family lost everything. Vance escaped the house and helped family friend Elke Gibbs start a gofundme account to help out.

But it turns out, that's not the only account online.

"It's been brought to my attention that there is getting to be too many funds out there," Vance says.

We found another account started that has raised over $300 and Vance says he noticed a third one he didn't authorize. He thinks it could be the work of distance or relatives or friends since both sides of the family are large and doesn't think there are any bad intentions.

But the official account is the one that will send help directly to the family.

"This fund will go right into an account where they can get their money on a debit card and be good to go."

Vance's son David Junior was just released from the hospital. His wife Stacy remains there and their two sons are recovering, but Stacy's mother Gail passed away.

The family lost nearly everything in the blaze which started on their front porch and they're looking for all the help they can get.

"All the people that got help out so far," Vance says. "It's been fantastic."

Vance says he plans to find whoever started the other accounts and ask if they can donate what they already received.
