HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -
All of us here at ABC 8News can't thank you enough for showing your support for the 100,000 Meals Campaign! So many people went the distance to donate food and funds to FeedMore on Wednesday at the Great 8 Tailgate.
One by one, people stopped by the Puritan Cleaners on Staples Mill Road to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors who are going hungry in Central Virginia. Nearly 2,500 meals were raised from the weight of food donated at the Great 8 Tailgate, and 47,000 meals were raised from cash donations. Adding in donations from other Puritan Cleaners locations, a total of 50,943 meals was raised on Wednesday alone!
"He was really gung ho about this," said proud mom Lauren, speaking about her son, Senegal.
Senegal just turned 6 and already has so much. Instead of asking for gifts for his recent birthday, he collected bags of food to give to FeedMore instead.
"The more contact I have with this organization, the better I feel about it, the more I love what they're doing for Central Virginia, and I'm really proud of him for kinda carrying on this tradition," Senegal's mother said.
There were also other examples of the community coming together for the cause. Melody Manley stopped by to give a complete stranger a ride to and from the drop-off site. The woman had been walking from Church Hill to add her donation to the pile.
"I was just thrilled to see that she was going to do that and still attempt to come up here and walk this far to come up here to give her little donation," said Manley.
There is no donation too big or small. Anything can help to make a dent in the hunger issue in our area. One dollar equals five meals. All of us at ABC 8News, Puritan Cleaners and FeedMore know you'll answer the call.
"If you give people in Richmond an easy way to give, they love to come out and give," said Puritan President/CEO Gary Glover, looking at the growing crowd. "They show up and do it every time, so it's been fun to see people come in droves to give today."
If you didn't have a chance to make it out to the Great 8 Tailgate, you can still drop off donations at any Puritan Cleaners location until the end of the week. You can also make a donation online.
