The other eight doughnut shops touted by USA Today are Blue Star Donuts in Portland, Ore., Glam Doll Donuts in Minneapolis, Donut Snob in Los Angeles, Donut Bar in San Diego, Gourdough’s Specialty Doughnuts in Austin, Texas, Doughnut Vault in Chicago, Brewnuts in Cleveland and World’s Fair Donuts in St. Louis.
Though Sugar Shack opened just last June, it has already been so successful that it opened a second location in downtown Richmond in March of this year. The shop offers everything from cinnamon sugar and strawberry iced house doughnuts to maple bacon specialty doughnuts and “monster” doughnuts like Maggie Walker’s Signature Dragon Tails.
USA today also cites Sugar Shack’s fun, frequent freebies, which are posted on the shop’s Facebook page. On any given day, Sugar Shack offers free house doughnuts to customers who bring in certain items or perform various tasks. For example, on June 2, customers who brought in their favorite Harry Potter novels received a free donut. Last Friday, patrons who ordered with their best Sean Connery impressions received a treat on the house.
In honor of its one-year anniversary, Sugar Shack will sell special t-shirts for $12 on Wednesday, June 11. The shirt earns customers a free donut a month for a year.
