LYNCHBURG, Va. (WRIC) -

Following the train derailment, massive oil spill and explosion that occurred in Lynchburg on April 30, a CSX inspection discovered a defect in a railroad track the day before the accident, according to a state official.

The Virginia State Corporation Commision’s utility and rail safety director spoke about the defect on Wednesday, but could not elaborate or say whether the defect contributed to the 17-car derailment. He also noted railroads have 30 days to analyze and act on discovered defects.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it is still collecting information on the incident.
