RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -
One week after Dave Brat became the Republican nomination for Virginia's 7th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, he emerged from spending time with family to greet supporters.
Brat arrived at the hotel and was quickly ushered into a conference room where he read a prepared statement to the media.
"We're got a message of economic prosperity that we're going to share with Central Virginia over the 7th District over the coming weeks," Brat says.
As for exactly what that message is, Brat would not elaborate or take any questions after. Brat's newly hired press secretary, Brian Gottstein, said that message reflects Brat's background as an economist.
"He's an economist," Gottstein says. "Obviously he brings a certain level of expertise on helping the economy, locally it means more jobs for the 7th District citizens."
The acting president of the Midlothian Rotary Club, Chandler Williams, says Brat wasn't invited as a part of a campaign stop, rather he was there just as a guest of another member.
Brat did speak briefly to the group, then immediately left. The campaign says Brat spent the rest of the day meeting with his new team.
