BALTIMORE, Md. (WRIC) - A Baltimore police officer is accused of slitting a dog's throat in a brutal act of animal cruelty.
Officer Jeffrey Bolger is charged with felony animal cruelty and has been suspended without pay.
Police say Bolger, along with other officers, responded to a woman who said she'd been bitten by a dog. Police say the dog, a 7-year-old Shar Pei, had already been secured with a dog pole when Bolger allegedly pulled out a knife and slit the dog's throat.
"She was just the sweetest dog and would never hurt anyone," says the dog's owner Sarah Gossard. "She was just scared that day and through all of those events -- scared and lost, thirsty, hungry -- yes I'm very sorry that she bit someone, but the actions after that were not ok."
Police say while the incident remains under investigation, there is no indication the dog tried to attack the officer.
