Man Arrives To Pick Up Craigslist Purchase, Gets Robbed at Gunpoint

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Thieves targeted and robbed a man who was only looking to buy something off Craigslist. Police say it was probably a set up.

The victim agreed to meet someone on Appleleaf Court near Summerleaf Drive to pick up his online purchase.

Instead of a friendly interaction, investigators say the man came face-to-face with two suspects who pointed a gun at him and took off with his cash.

This isn't the first time a crime like this has occurred: last year in Richmond, two men met up with a person they thought was a buyer from Craigslist. Instead, the suspect took out a gun and snatched cell phones from the victims.

After a few years ago, thieves in our area targeted people selling Xboxes on Craigslist; the criminals would grab the video game consoles right out of the seller's hands and run off with them.

While police insist there's no reason to be afraid of Craigslist, they say common sense goes a long way if you're using it to buy or sell items.

"When you go to meet a person, there are just some basic, simple safety rules you want to follow," cautions Chesterfield Police Corporal Michael Catron. "Number one: you always want go to a public place, where there will be people. Where there are other people around, where there's plenty of visibility."

Remember, the person you're striking a deal with on Craigslist is a complete stranger; you know nothing about them. So it's also a good idea to take a friend along for the ride.

"Always let someone know where you're going but if at all possible, take someone with you go to do the transaction or you go to meet the person. There's always strength and safety in numbers," says Corporal Catron.

Police also suggest you leave your valuables home. Don't take anything more than the money you need to seal the deal.

Corporal Catron urges, "If something doesn't feel right, if you just don't feel good about a situation, if you don't feel right about the surroundings or what's taking place, back out of it. Back out of it and get out of it as quickly as you can."
