CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Several new laws are going into effect Tuesday, July 1, including Brendon's Law, which was inspired after a Chesterfield boy was killed by a stray bullet.

This law comes nearly a year after 7-year-old Brendon Mackey was killed.

Under the new law, it is now a felony if someone is hurt by celebratory gunfire and a person could face up to five years in prison

Last 4th of July Brendon was killed by a stray bullet while walking with his dad to a fireworks show in Brandermill. Soon after, the Mackey family started working with the group Moms Demand Action and lawmakers to help create Brendon's Law.

While progress has been made with this law, police are still searching for the person responsible for shooting the gun that led to Brendon's death.
