"RVA Fireworks on the James" on schedule despite possible rain

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Richmond's annual Fourth of July "RVA Fireworks on the James" is still scheduled for Thursday, July 3, even with the possibility of rain. On Wednesday crews from "Fireworks by Grucci" were putting protective gear over the fireworks to shield them from possible rain.

The fireworks are set to go off  on July 3 at 9:15 p.m. at Brown's Island, with entertainment starting at 7 p.m. This is the largest fireworks show in Virginia and a lot of work goes into putting it together.  8 News was able to get a behind-the-scenes look of the show's set-up on Belle Isle.

Renowned company "Fireworks by Grucci" puts on a world-class show in Richmond every year. About a dozen workers arrived at Belle Isle three days before the show in order to set up. "We started Monday morning here at 7 o'clock and we'll be here at 7 o'clock every day through show day," said Doug Zastrow, chief technician for Grucci.

Zastrow and his team had to construct two separate sites on the island which will serve as the launching pad for nearly 3,000 glittering lights on July 3. On show day pyro-technicians will be responsible for six firing systems that will be connected to an electrical board that triggers the fireworks.

At an event this big timing is critical to the success of the show because the fireworks are set music and there more than 700 firing cues. One misfire could throw off the entire show. "There's been research done that shows different colors evoke different emotions. One of the things that we'll do with a very upbeat, intense number is we'll use lots of reds or golds that break rapidly in the sky," Zastrow said.

If sponsors do cancel the event for Thursday night, it will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 5 at 9:15 p.m.
