UPDATE: Girl Drowns in Spotsylvania Lake Friday Evening

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office and officials are investigating, after a seven-year-old girl drowned in a lake just before a 4th of July fireworks show.


The tragic drowning happened at the Lake Wilderness 2 community on Friday evening.


The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office says that two girls were playing on a sandy beach next to the shallow lake.


One of the girls became distressed and called for help; sadly, the second girl drowned. Deputies and fire crews recovered the victim's body from the lake around 10:21 p.m.

At approximately 8:30pm, Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a missing child call at the club house and lake, located in the Lake Wilderness 2 Subdivision in Western Spotsylvania County.  The community was preparing to present a 4th of July fireworks display and a large number of people were gathered in the area. 

The family of the missing 7 year old girl had been searching the area for about a half hour, when they called the  911 Emergency Communications Center.  Upon arrival, Deputies began the search for the missing child and discovered, through contacts and interviews that the child had been seen in or near the water, near the sandy beach, shortly before she disappeared.  Deputies contacted the Spotsylvania County Fire Department, Rescue and Dive Team who responded to the location within minutes. 


After a search of the water, around the beach area of the community club house, the body of the 7 year old girl was discovered by Fire Department Divers at 10:20pm.  The remains were transported from the scene for examination at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond.  Detectives from the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division responded to conduct the death investigation.
