YORKTOWN, Va. (WRIC) -

Each week, 8News Meteorologist Tim Pandajis explores different day trip spots in our area; you can get to most of them on just a tank a gas! This week, Tim visited Yorktown.

Yorktown, Virginia is nestled  along the York River is southeastern Virginia. Not only is there a ton of American history to experience there, you can also find plenty of fun summertime activities.

If you are looking for an alternative to the bustling beaches of Virginia beach, head to Yorktown beach, where there are beautiful beaches for you to enjoy all summer long.? As a bonus, parking and admission to the beaches are free.

After you're done enjoying the beaches, take a cruise along the historic York River with the crew of the Schooner Alliance. They offer both scenic history cruises, geared more towards adults, as well as pirate cruises, a favorite of the little ones. The crew dresses the part and you even get to fire off a real cannon!

Laura Lohse, owner of the Schooner Alliance, adds "We offer a couple of different sails: what we had today was the Pirate Cruise and that's geared towards kids, the littler the better. Of course all kids love pirates."

Explaining how the Pirate Cruise is more than just fun, Greg Lohse owner of the Schooner Alliance says, "This is Captain Mayhem's School of Piracy. at the introductory level, we teach kids how to set sail on a pirate ship, how to steer the pirate ship; they learn how to trim sails, hauling lines, the occasional shanty is nice. We teach them how to tie some knots so that they can do battle repairs or tie up some prisoners and we teach them some other things, such as being sneaky, conniving, underhanded, those kinds of things that are useful if they decide to pursue a life of piracy."

The demonstration is a big hit with youngsters, and is a fun educational experience.

"Sort of hands on things, we try and get the kids involved. We try to give them a bit of a historical background.," says Greg.

If you enjoy sightseeing, the Schooner Alliance also goes out on a 2-hour historical sights tour where you can sail by the Yorktown Battlefield, the place where the British army surrendered and freedom was won during the American Revolution.
