HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -

After news that Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. would be coming to the Richmond area back in April, many expressed their excitement about the addition of the upscale grocer to the local shopping options. On Thursday evening, the Henrico Planning Commission approved a plan to bring the store to Short Pump.

Henrico leaders voted on a plans to bring the upscale grocery store to Short Pump at West Broad Marketplace at a lengthy planning commission meeting on Thursday evening. Despite flyers and a Facebook post opposing the Wegmans, there was no opposition at the meeting Thursday.

An unnamed source stirred controversy by leaving anti-Wegmans flyers in Henrico neighborhoods earlier in the week. Despite this, the plan was approved and many in the community say they are happy about it.

Also a part of the development plan is Cabela's Incorporated, a hunting and fishing specialty store which has announced its intent to build near Wegmans in 2016.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. announced in a press release in April that the family-owned chain will soon build two supermarkets in the Richmond area.

The two stores, one in Midlothian at Stonehenge Village Shopping Center and one in Short Pump at West Broad Marketplace, will be similar in design and size to Wegmans’ current stores in Virginia, which range from 120,000 to 140,000 sq. ft.

Hundreds of people left positive comments on the 8News Facebook page following the announcement, most of them saying they were happy about the grocery store coming to town.

On Wednesday evening, however, word of an anti-Wegmans flyer began circulating around town. 8News Reporter Tim Wronka obtained a copy of the bright yellow flyer on Thursday afternoon.

"Stop the Wegmans" bold letters at the top of the flyer read. "The traffic is going to be horrible. No one is going to be able to drive down Broad Street," it states.

The flyer also urged citizens to contact members of the Henrico Planning Commission to tell them "we don't want the traffic or grocery store," and lists their names and phone numbers.

Joe Emerson, director of the Henrico Planning Commission, told 8News Thursday afternoon that they expect to approve the plans for Wegmans at the meeting. He added that other than the anonymous flyers and phone calls, he has not seen any opposition about the store from the local public.

The next step is for the plan to go before the Henrico Board of Supervisors.
