Dr. Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon. He is one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the UK before working at some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Drabu always had a passion for oral surgery and on his return from Saudi Arabia completed his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Drabu is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He is also an active mentor and tutor to postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Dr. Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published on a leading dentistry website on 3 July 2014 on the request to reduce sugar intake. The full article can be read here.

Dr. Tariq Drabu said, It is essential that as dental professionals we ensure patients are aware of the dangers of sugar intake and the impact it has on teeth. According to two experts who published an article in the Public Health Nutrition Journal, we should only have four teaspoons of sugar each day, this is less than the guideline which was published by the World Health Organisation.

Dr. Tariq Drabu went on to say Sugar, especially refined sugar, has such a negative impact on oral health and can be a significant contributor to dental decay. With over a third of children in the UK aged twelve with dental decay, this is something we need to address right now.

Dr. Tariq Drabu closed in saying The problem is that a majority of foods available on the shelves today contain added often hidden sugars. Added sugars dont only contribute adversely to oral health, but they can also lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes. When we look at the statistics and see that between six and ten percent of all health costs are associated with dental decay, it is important as dental professionals that we put ourselves at the forefront of the sugar intake discussion and educate our patients accordingly. Through education and understanding, we can have a great impact not only on our patients dental health, but on their overall heath.
