This open letter, posted in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, lists several groups as supporters of the controversial Shockoe Stadium plan.
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -
Supporters of a Shockoe Bottom stadium put out a bold public appeal this morning: they paid for a very visible political ad in the Richmond Times Dispatch.
The ad promotes Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones' "revitalize RVA" proposal, which centers on building a new ballpark in Shockoe Bottom.
The statement reads: "We believe that Revitalize RVA will transform Richmond into a more vital and dynamic city."
17 community organizations are listed at the bottom of the ad, including the Black History Museum and Cultural Center, the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association and the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber paid about $4,300 for it to run in the paper. But opponents remain staunchly against a ballpark in Shockoe Bottom.
"Here we go again," says resident Phil Wilayto. "It's like hand to hand combat."
Other opponents says the ad is just a new weapon in the arsenal of the enemy in the ongoing ballpark battle.
Lesley Bruno, from the Chamber, says while there’s not a pending vote on the plan, the Chamber still wanted the public to know they’re very much in support of it.
