SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- It's widely recognized that friendships are important, boosting everything from a person's happiness to health. International Friendship Day, observed on August 3, 2014, is the perfect time to thank friends for the role they play in our lives. For many, that means logging on to thank a good friend they know only online. That's right. A recent survey conducted by Skout, the leading global app that helps you meet new people and expand your social circle, reveals that 76% of people have a good friend who they met online and have never met in-person.

"Online platforms and mobile devices have changed how we meet and connect with people," said Christian Wiklund, co-founder and CEO of Skout. "While in-person friendships will always be important, technology has made it easier for us to meet others who are truly amazing friend material but may not live nearby, or even on the same continent. Social media is transforming who our friends are and how we experience friendship in a mobile, online society."

Women are more likely to have online-only friendships. 83% of women say they have a good friend who have met online only compared to 73% of men who say the same.

Last year, Skout facilitated more than 500 million connections among users of its site and app. The Skout survey was conducted online in June 2014. The survey fielded responses from 7,979 people who use Skout.
