Over 271 million users log on to Twitter on a monthly basis, accounting for the 500 million tweets that are delivered daily. As the volume of information increases, so has the number of requests for user information and data from various world governments.

That information was revealed in a recent report released by the social networking company on Thursday that notes "a steady increase in global requests for account information, content removal, and copyright take downs."

In their Transparency Report, Twitter said that they have received 2,058 requests for account information from 54 countries, a 46 percent increase from their past report.

In addition, of those 54 countries, eight were nations that had not previously submitted requests.

The United States led all countries in information requests at 1,257, over 61 percent of the total number of requests made been January 1 and June 30 of this year.

Japan was second at 192 and third was Saudi Arabia.

The company did say that the data in the reports are "as accurate as possible, but may not be 100 percent comprehensive."

As concerns about government access to information on social media rise, Twitter said this online report is their way of providing users a look at what kinds of information has been requested by governments in a simple and complete way.

"With each successive edition, we aim to provide more meaningful and constructive insight into the global government and copyright requests we receive and their respective impact, with the goal of making this report more compelling and informative for [users.]," Twitter Senior Manager Jeremy Kessel said in a blog post on their website.
