RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Less than a day after stepping down from his position as House majority leader, Representative Eric Cantor announced that he will be resigning from his 7th District Virginia seat effective August 15.

In a statement, the former majority leader said that it was "with tremendous gratitude and a heavy heart" that he made his announcement to step away from Congress, calling it a time of transition.

He added that he has informed Governor Terry McAuliffe to hold a special election during the November general election so that the successor to his seat can begin serving immediately.

"It is vitally important that the constituents have a clear and strong voice during the consequential lame duck session of Congress," Cantor said in a prepared statement.

Cantor lost in the Virginia Republican primary in June to David Brat, an underfunded, tea part-backed opponent.

Following that loss, Cantor had previously said that he was going to serve the remainder of his term, slated to end in January of next year.

As he steps way from the steps of Washington, Cantor said the he and his family are ready for the transition to private life.

"Diana and I will make decisions about the future. I certainly look forward to doing what I did when I first became a Republican: advocating, as a private citizen, for the conservative solutions to the problems we face that will secure our nation’s greatness and provide a better life for all Americans," he said.

Cantor has served in the United States House of Representatives since 2000.

Those in the 7th Congressional District will choose their representative at the polls on November 4.
