Lanes Re-Opened on I-295 After Four-Car Accident

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - All southbound lanes were closed this morning on Interstate 295 in Chesterfield County near mile marker 15 due to a four-car accident.

According to Virginia State Police, a 2005 BMW was traveling north on I-295 when it crossed over the center median and crashed into a guardrail. That vehicle continued to travel north into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Ford Expedition that was traveling southbound.

The SUV overturned in the median of the interstate after the impact. A van driving in the same direction was hit by the BMW before finally coming to rest after hitting a Kenworth tractor-trailer, causing the truck to jack-knife across the left lane.

Traffic was redirected onto nearby State Route 10 as a detour while crews worked to clear the scene.

The driver of the BMW, 28-year-old Hector Morales, Jr. of New York, was transported to VCU Medical Center in Richmond via Virginia State Police Med-Flight with non-life threatening injuries.

Morales has been charged with Reckless Driving, No Operators License, and Possession of Marijuana.

Officials say that the suspect fatigue could have been a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

Interstate 295 reopened a short time later.
