Chamberlayne Avenue Stabber Sentenced to Life in Prison

The man who violently stabbed 44-year-old Della Scott dead and left 44-year-old Carolyn Chapman in the hospital with serious injuries will spend life behind bars.

Benjamin Dancy pleaded guilty to second degree murder, malicious wounding and robbery charges. He was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.

Around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Major Steve Drew says Dancy robbed and stabbed the women at the Chamberlayne Gardens Apartment Complex.

Police were on scene that night asking the community to for help to identify the suspect.

"We got lucky," Drew says. "There was some evidence that was captured from a video camera, and we were able to take some still photos from that and pass them out in the community."

A few hours later, a citizen called saying he saw a man that matched the suspect's description.

The Richmond Police Department arrested Dancy, 50, and he was charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and credit card fraud in connection with the incident.
