14,000 Chesterfield Students to Receive Chromebook Laptops

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - 14,000 students are being issued Google Chromebooks this year at Chesterfield County Middle Schools.

Parents have reached out to 8News with concerns about their child's security and safety on the computers.

Chesterfield Public Schools Executive Director of Technology, Adam Seldow says the Chromebooks will be monitored by protection software at all times.

"The same level of content filtering that students have always found in schools extends beyond that: at home, the coffee shop, everywhere," Seldow says .School officials say students will undergo training to learn what websites they should and shouldn't be visiting. There is software on each and every computer to block websites with inappropriate content and it's always turned on.

Teachers will also be able to monitor each screen in their classroom to see what students are doing.

"The Chromebook isn't a replacement for a textbook, but a tool for teachers and a tool for students to pursue their passions," said Seldow.

Chesterfield picked the Chromebook because of its tablet-like speed.

Each computer comes with this padded case for added protection and each middle-schooler is paying an extra $50 technology fee that covers any accidental damage.

"The Chromebook itself is pretty sturdy. We took that into consideration... are they backpack ready? Can they withstand they pressure of other books and drops during normal use?"

A principal can waive the $50 computer fee for families that are facing financial hardships.

92% of Chesterfield School families have internet at home, but Seldow says that students won't have to have it for homework.

"We encourage the teachers not to make an assignment due tomorrow that requires heavy internet usage. We want to give them plenty of time to access the internet at school, library or somewhere else."
