Tyra joined the 8News team in May 2018. She comes from our sister station, WAVY in Portsmouth, VA.
She is a Double Alumna of Norfolk State University (Behold!) after receiving her bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications in May 2016, and recently earned her Master of Arts in Media and Communications. While in graduate school, she worked both part-time at Tidewater Community College and at WAVY-TV.
While at NSU, Tyra had the pleasure of being able to work for the on-campus TV station and create popular content such as “Inventing our history” – a segment about African American Inventors as well as capturing popular campus events both as a producer and as on-air talent.
A self-proclaimed “Southern Brooklynite”, Tyra is happy to be in the Richmond area and closer to home as she hails from Fairfax County, VA and spent a lot of her childhood years in Brooklyn. She is excited to be starting her career at WRIC and lives life by the quote from Dr. King- “ Faith is taking the step even when you don’t see the whole staircase”.
When she’s not fueling her passion for news, Tyra is excited to explore Richmond and see what the state capital has to offer. She also enjoys cooking, spending time with her family and doing community service. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, Inc. and the Order of the Eastern Star.
