HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A vigil was held on Sunday for the 4-year-old Henrico County boy who was killed last week.

Police say Demetrius Jefferson found a gun inside his home and accidentally shot, killed himself on Monday, May 7.

Family, friends and community members celebrated his life while also bringing awareness to the tragedy, and to rally around his mother, Tiara Rogers, who was without a son on Mother’s Day.

“He loved his papa. He loved his grandma. He loved his mama,” Demetrius’ aunt, Monique Rogers, said. “He loved his little cousins and playing and everything. He was just the perfect child in our eyesight.”

Demetrius, also known as ‘Meecho,’ was a superhero to those he knew.

“He’s so in love with superheroes that he was a sure-enough hero for his mom,” Rogers said.

Demetrius’ loved ones are now focused on keeping his spirit alive while hoping others never have to experience this pain.

“Cherish every moment that you have with your kids because who knows when it will be the last moment,” Rogers added. “Make sure that you’re attentive to what’s going on with the weapons. Make sure they’re out of reach. Just make sure you’re putting your family in a safe situation.”

A public viewing for Demetrius will be held on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the funeral at noon on Wednesday, both at Love Cathedral Community Church.
