Feedmore, Central Virginia’s core hunger-relief organization, is one of twenty-one organizations across the Commonwealth receiving grants from No Kid Hungry Virginia. The funding will support free summer meal sites, a key source of nutrition for low-income children.
Summer is the hungriest time of year for many kids. When schools close for the summer, school meals disappear as well.
The federal Summer Meals program connects children to the nutrition they need. Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, administered by the Virginia Department of Education and served by organizations that families trust, these meals make sure kids have access to healthy meals when school is out of session.
According to No Kid Hungry, Only about 15 percent of Virginia kids who rely on free or reduced-price school lunches are also getting free meals through summer programs. The latest round of funding will help sites across Virginia expand and improve programs to reach more youth during the summer months.
FeedMore received a grant of $5,000.
In total, No Kid Hungry distributed $167,509 to organizations in Virginia.
