Local Boy Scout raising money to build adaptive swing set for special needs classmates

AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A high school student and Boy Scout in Amelia County is leading a fundraising effort to build an adaptive playground for the special needs students at his school.

Lucas Hasenfus, a junior at Amelia County High School, is also a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 6504 out of Amelia Court House.

He told 8News he recognized that his special needs classmates didn’t have adequate equipment to play and exercise on, so he’s dedicating his Eagle Scout project to addressing that need.

“The students currently have no dedicated play area to call their own as often is the case at the high school level,” Haseunfus explained. “It’s important to provide this outlet for adolescents.”

Hasenfus is hoping to raise $4,300 to build an alternative swing set and play area on site at Amelia H.S. He provided a breakdown of the money needed for each piece of equipment on a Facebook page created to help spread the word.

The project has been approved by local council and the school, which is helping him coordinate the fundraiser. Anyone interested in donating can do so on the fundraiser’s Facebook page or mail a check to the school at the following address, re: Lucas Hasenfus’ Eagle project/special needs swing-set:

“Again, thank you for considering and helping us reach this goal!” Hasenfus added.

A GoFundMe has also been created to help him reach his $4,000 goal.

“I’m excited to get this project moving and have a staggering $4000 target to hit in just a couple month’s time.”
