University of Richmond raises, releases monarch butterflies

Positively Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) —- Students and faculty members at the University of Richmond are working to preserve a species of butterflies.

Fifteen monarch butterflies were raised on campus and are now being released.

The butterflies have been tagged with special stickers to track the population, which has dwindled in recent years. A news release from the school said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently assessing whether monarchs will be listed as threatened or endangered.

Those butterflies will now migrate to Mexico to rest over the winter.

The project was led by Jennifer Sevin, a biology professor at UR.
