‘You are all amazing!’ WWII veteran thanks Henrico 3rd-graders for birthday cards

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — World War II Veteran Duane Sherman in California only wanted cards for his 96th birthday.

To help make that wish come true, his daughter took to Facebook to ask anyone reading her post to send her father a birthday card.

She initially thought they would only receive a couple hundred cards. But they instead received more than 50,000 cards.

Among them were cards from Mrs. Bishop’s 3rd-grade class at Dumbarton Elementary in Henrico County.

The 96-year-old veteran even took the time to write the students back, thanking them for the birthday wishes.

Henrico County Public Schools posted the sweet response on their Facebook page.

“Wow, you all are amazing! You made turning 96 so special! We loved each and every card you made with all the kind words and well wishes. Go Wildcats!” the postcard read.

A student in Mrs. Bishops class says he and his classmates wanted to write the veteran “because he served the country and he protected the country.”
