Why the 100k Meals campaign is so important

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — 8News is taking the lead to help feed Central Virginia families in need. We’re partnering with Puritan Cleaners for the 100,000 Meals campaign.

Last year, we raised almost 175,000 meals.

8News Meteorologist Matt DiNardo found out why donating now is important year-round.

“Think about all of the children out there that are going hungry, that don’t have food to eat.” Lloyd Bingham said.

“Kids can’t do it by themselves,” Cynthia Black said. “Not only do we need food, but we also need baby food.”

“We just need good food because people need it, because they are going through the changes in their life,” Yvette Morton said.

Bingham, Black and Morton all experienced unplanned events, and it caused chaos. They didn’t know where their next meal was going to come from.

“When I was younger, I had to use a food pantry because I was working, but I wasn’t making enough money to buy the food and pay the bills,” Bingham said.

“At one time, I was in that state. And I never take anything for granted because you can be up on top of things and then something can happen,” Morton said.

“Pride can get in the way, too, so you have to let that pride go and realize that there are people in the world that are willing to help you and give to you in your time of need,” Morton added.

People in our community are in need all year round.

“Everybody wants to help out on holidays, but we need food, people need food year round,” Bingham said. “You got something in your cabinet that you know you will throw it away – don’t throw it away.”

“It is not just on a holiday or a special occasion; they need these things every day to survive,” Black said

For the next few weeks, 8News will show you how local schools are doing their part to collect food.

And you can help, too!

Drop off food at any Puritan Cleaners location now through May 19. Or you can donate money online through our website.
