CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield Police are investigating an attempted abduction of a child that occurred Monday evening.
Police say shortly after 7 p.m., a 7-year-old girl was walking home on the sidewalk from a friend’s house the 3600 block of Stone Harbor Drive when a man pulled up next to her, got out of his car and picked her up. Police say she kicked him and was able to escape. The girl then ran home and told her parents.
“It was, you know, a scary experience,” said the victim’s mother, who wished to remain anonymous. “She was just really brave to react the way that she did.”
The victim’s mother says they prepared their kids for this type of situation.
“We’ve showed them videos in the past and talked to them about what they would do in those situations, and luckily my daughter knew what to do at the time and she did the right thing,” the mother stated.
But she says they never thought they would actually face the situation.
“It’s a good wake-up call that all of us need to be talking to our children about stranger safety and what to do in these situations because, obviously, it doesn’t matter where you live, these kinds of things can happen anywhere.”
She said she’s happy and amazed the lesson stuck.
“it was amazing that she was able to come in and tell us exactly what happened. We recorded it, wrote everything down even before the police showed up which was only a few minutes later.”
Police are calling the reaction of the child and parents crucial to their investigation.
“As time progresses, children tend to lose track of time and lose track of places and events and exactly how things transpired or suspect descriptions, so certainly the victim in this case the family did everything that was right to come straight to the police,” Sergeant Brad Conner with Chesterfield County Police told 8News Reporter Mark Tenia.
The suspect is described as an older, tall white male with a thin build. He had messy brown and gray hair and wrinkles, and he was wearing a button-down shirt. The suspect vehicle is described as an older model, brown and/or yellow, four-door vehicle with a dent in the driver’s side door. The suspect was the vehicle’s only occupant.
