‘Please don’t let me die’: Woman recalls finding Hopewell man fatally shot

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — A man was shot and killed Thursday in Hopewell, according to police at the scene.

Police told 8News that a man was shot in a vehicle in the 2300 block of Maple Street. The victim was later found on the grass near the corner of Maple Street and Arlington Road.

He was identified as Jaequan Lamonte Johnson, 21, of Hopewell. He was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.

8News spoke with the woman who found the man shot and bleeding outside her home.

“He grabbed my hand, he said ‘ma’am could you please don’t let me die,’ I said ‘I’m gonna do everything I can to help you’,” the woman, who did not want to be identified, said. “And he squeezed my hand, squeezed my hand until a detective came on scene.”

The woman said she was feeding her daughter when she came outside and saw the young man laying in the grass in front of her home after being shot up the road.

“I was numb when I came outside,” she added. “He said ma’am could you, he said could you please help me.”

Police believe after the man was shot on Maple Street inside a vehicle, got out, and then proceeded to walk a few step’s from the woman’s home, where he was eventually found.

“I don’t even know him but it hurts me to my heart just to come outside to see a young fellah on the ground and saying help me,” she told 8News.

She added that the the man was alive when emergency crews responded. Police told her that he later died at John Randolph Medical Center .

“I never thought I would see this,” she said. “To come out my home to see a young fellah laying on the ground.”

Police have not released any suspect description. Anyone with information is asked to contact Hopewell Police Department.
