Police investigating overnight quadruple shooting near Exxon in Shockoe Bottom

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department said they are investigating a quadruple shooting that occurred near Exxon Gas Station in Shockoe Bottom early Sunday morning.

Police said they were called to the 200 block of Crane Street for a report of a shooting at about 1:27 a.m.

When officers arrived, they said they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said three other victims took themselves to a local hospital. They all had gunshot wounds, and one had life-threatening injuries.

8News arrived to 17th and Grace Streets around 4 a.m. Sunday. Our team observed at least five patrol cars with the Richmond Police Department sitting in the parking lot, and investigators at the scene.

Carlos Londoño, owner of La Bodega and Margarita’s Cantina in Shockoe Bottom, told 8News Sunday that business owners like him are concerned about the continued gun violence in that area and that it must stop.

“It’s uncomfortable. We’re not going to bring our families here at night. Even though this is more of a nightlife area, you know, but still, no one wants to hear gunshots,” he said.

Empty bottles of alcohol, shattered glass and police caution tape can still be seen in the parking lot across from the Exxon at 17th and Grace streets from Sunday morning’s incident.

Londoño said Shockoe Bottom business owners like him are paying thousands of dollars for top-notch security because of gun violence concerns.

“Businesses here are not even doing the best they can. They’re doing what we have to do,” Londoño said.

He said people drive up and down the road popping wheelies on motorcycles and use that parking lot as a hangout space.

“You’ve got a lot of gun violence, fights because of it and it’s a way from us, but I think that the city and the mayor needs to close them off, put a gate, some sort of, you know, the businesses are doing our part,” Londoño said. “We’re doing our part as far as paying a lot of money for security and protecting our community.”
