Broad Street bar under investigation after Uber driver brutally attacked

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia ABC is investigating claims that Cornerstone Cigar Bar & Restaurant on Broad Street is contributing to a recent uptick in disruptive behavior that has been plaguing nearby Fan District residents.

This week, video surfaced showing a man brutally assaulted while trying to navigate through a dance party that broke out in the middle of the street and shut down the intersection of Grace and Allison streets — located roughly one block away from Cornerstone Bar & Restaurant.

8News spoke with the victim, who said he was an Uber driver simply trying to maneuver his way through the commotion.

“I don’t even know if I got both feet on the ground or both feet before he hit me with his fist across this cheek,” Bradley Johnson told 8News.

Area residents said there has been a recent uptick in suspicious activity and fights.

“There’s always fights happening,” said Corrine Rose, who lives in the area. “Every weekend there are people screaming, couples fighting … “

Councilwoman Kim Gray told 8News said she’s received several complaints about the area over the past several months, and began receiving calls about last weekend’s incident beginning early Sunday morning.

“People blocking the roadway, getting in front of cars, having words with drivers, noise, waking up the neighborhood when the club lets out, trash, hit-and-runs,” she explained. “It seems to be a club operating as a restaurant.”

In a statement, Virginia ABC said it is working with the Richmond Police Department to determine if further action is necessary against the Broad Street restaurant.

“Virginia ABC is evaluating the merits of the information that has been presented to us about the Cornerstone Cigar Bar & Restaurant. We are working with the Richmond Police Department and conducting an investigation to determine if activities at licensed establishments in that area are contributing to problems in nearby neighborhoods. Any facts discovered during this investigation will determine if any ABC action is necessary.” — Virginia ABC
