Cards pour in to celebrate Richmond WWII veteran’s 99th birthday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Richmond World War II veteran celebrates a big birthday — Russell Scott is 99 today!

You’ll remember we first met this veteran from ‘The Greatest Generation’ when 8News reporter Amy Simpson took him up in a B-25 like the one he served on.

Each week, Scott volunteers at the Virginia War Memorial, talking to students about his experience as a tail gunner on a B-25 and as a Prisoner of War seven decades ago.

The War Memorial collected nearly 150 cards and presents from around the country to surprise Scott on his big day.

“I’m just thanking God that I’m still here,” said Russell Scott.

“And I think I’m gonna make it through to 100 — or better.”

In the year ahead, Scott plans to travel to Connecticut for a reunion with WWII vets, spend 4th of July in Nags Head, and eat as much ‘Mission BBQ’ as he can.

For those interested in sending Russell Scott a card — the War Memorial is still accepting them.

Cards can be sent to:
