EMPORIA, Va., (WRIC) — The City of Emporia revealed why the water had turned a light pink over the weekend.
City officials said that a mechanical failure at one of the chemical pumps at the water treatment plant caused the water to turn light pink to red in color.
In a social media post, the City of Emporia warned residents to stop drinking or using water at 7 p.m. Sunday through midnight.
“Since the failure at the facility, other safeguards have been put in place to prevent any other occurrences,” the City of Emporia said.
Replacement pumps have been ordered and will be installed on Friday, September 13.
According to city officials, the water is safe to drink or use.
