GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities in Greensville County are looking for a gunman and two other suspects who broke into a motel and shot a clerk during a robbery.

According to the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office, three suspects shot out the front glass door of the American Inn Motel, located on Moore’s Ferry Road in Skippers, around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

One of the suspects took cash from a drawer and then went into the back office where the clerk — who’s also the owner’s wife — was located.

The suspect asked the clerk for more money, but after she advised there wasn’t any, that’s when the suspect shot her, deputies say. She was flown to VCU Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.

The shooting suspect was wearing a white mask, a black hoodie with a dark grey short sleeve shirt over the top of the hoodie, black pants with a white stripe down both sides and dark shoes. The second suspect — who entered the lobby with the shooting suspect — was wearing a mask, a dark coat with a hoodie, blue jeans and dark shoes. The third suspect was dressed in all dark clothes and remained at the door as a lookout.

8News spoke with locals who shared their shock about what happened.

Zachary Tawes, a local who said he knew the victim, spoke with 8News about the owners of the motel.

“Broke my heart,” Tawes said. “Something like that to her shouldn’t happen.” Another man, John Clodfelter, spoke with 8News about the incident and the people who run the motel.

“I’m really surprised, nice lady,” Clodfelter said. “Can’t imagine what happened here. They don’t have that much money.”

The news upset many people who knew the victim.

“Makes me angry,” Tawes told 8News. “Somebody like that, that cares about everyone the way she does, doesn’t deserve for something like that to happen to her.”
