RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A 19-year-old Chester man died days after he was found shot on Richmond’s southside last week.

Police said Thursday that they responded to a reported shooting at around 9 p.m. on Monday, April 15 in the 4000 block of Meridian Avenue, near Jefferson Davis Highway. When officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Samuel Flaughter, of Chester, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police said he was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Thursday, April 18.

Donna Hobbs, a family friend, says Samuel lived in Chester since the age of four and was a student at John Tyler Community College.

“The whole thing is very heartbreaking,” she told 8News.

Hobbs, who is best friends with Samuel’s mother Nancy Bailey, said: “she always talked about her son.”

“He was just a wonderful person.”

Police have not released any suspect information at this time but say they are investigating Flaughter’s death as a homicide.
