Chesterfield County school bus aide accused of strangling student

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A school bus aide in Chesterfield County has been arrested and charged with assaulting a student.

The alleged assault took place on a county school bus on Thursday, February 7. Police say 48-year-old John T. Wescott strangled a 12-year-old student during the student's bus ride home from Grafton School.

Grafton is a private school for students 'with behavioral health and intellectual disabilities,' according to the school's website.

Police tell 8News the student was treated for injuries at an area hospital and released.

Wescott, of the 5500 block of Mulberry Drive, was arrested on Monday, Feb. 11, and charged with strangulation, felony child abuse and misdemeanor assault. He was being held without bond pending a hearing this morning in Chesterfield County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

"It's sad that could happen in this day and age," a shocked Chesterfield County resident told 8News. "It's wrong; the bus driver shouldn't have done that, period.

"I hope the child is OK."
