(ABCNEWS/WRIC) — Dash camera video captured a Georgia police officer being dragged by the car of a 24-year-old man who was about to be arrested for drug possession and DUI last Friday.
On April 5, according to ABC News, the officer pulled over Dennis Aguirre on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta, Georgia. Aguirre was reportedly driving recklessly, a release from the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said.
ABC News reports the officer, who was not identified, suspected Aguirre had illegal drugs and may have been impaired while driving due to his “responses and behavior.”
The release said a struggle began when the officer began arresting Aguirre, who had gotten back into his car and tried to drive off. The officer was still holding on to the suspect and was dragged for several feet, ABC News said.
The officer was eventually able to turn Aguirre’s car off.
“Our officer’s arm was pinned inside of the car by the suspect, which is why he wasn’t able to let go and disengage from the suspect,” the release stated. “Once stopped, Mr. Aguirre continued to fight with and attempt to run with our officer until he was tackled to the ground and taken into custody.”
The footage from the officer’s dashcam shows a struggle and then the driver accelerating in the white sedan. The car then stops and the officer is able to remove the suspect from the car. The suspect breaks free eventually but is then tackled by the officer moments later.
Multiple officers arrive on the scene seconds after the suspect is brought to the ground.
Both Aguirre and the officer suffered minor cuts and scratches, according to ABC News.
Aguirre was charged with aggravated assault against a police officer, driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving while under the influence, driving with an obscured or missing license plate, reckless driving, sale of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and willful obstruction of law enforcement, ABC News reports.
